Socio-Cultural Appropriateness of the Use of Historic Persian Gardens for Modern Urban Edible Gardens

Historic gardens have the ability to provide several ecosystem services in cities, including provisioning (i.e., food production). The historic Iran (known as “Persian Gardens”) never been considered places that could be used for production. As a result, purpose of this paper is investigate whether Iranian gardens’ spatial and structural layout suitable modern urban gardening. We conducted field studies six recognized Persian four provinces via qualitative analysis according socio-cultural guidelines drawn from literature review. results suggested combining elements formal landscape design, non-edible decorative plants, traditional artwork would increase attractiveness. Regarding encouraging users become involved gardening, we found separating productive units containing edible plants public using central meeting spot populated by aesthetic items may attract ordinary visitors who are interested gardening without disturbing anyone’s activities. Furthermore, multifunctionality, value, health-promoting qualities constitute considerable achievement garden making model study can enhance our understanding design practical implications sustainable planning architecture.
